Hola Family and Friends,

Try to avoid driving late at night from the border to Penasco. A friend said he recently crossed the border into Mexico just before midnight and was followed just outside of Sonoita and they were flashing their brights trying to get him to pull over and the sped past him and turned around flashing their brights trying to get him to pull over a few times. Once they were out of sight he sped to Penasco and was very lucky nothing happened to him.

We all know Penasco is safer than most cities in the world but please be extra careful, we have been very fortunate for years coming and going to this wonderful town and let’s do what we can to keep it that way.

Sometimes I’ve been called a maverick because I don’t always agreewith my colleagues, but then, only dead fish swim with the stream allthe time. The stream here is Mexico.You would have to be living on another planet to avoid hearing howdangerous Mexico has become, and, yes, it’s true drug wars haveescalated violence in Mexico, causing collateral damage, a phrase I hate. Collateral damage is a cheap way of saying that innocent people, some of them tourists, have been robbed, hurt or killed.But that’s not the whole story. Neither is this. This is my story.

I walk the streets of my Vallarta neighborhood alone day or night. And I don’t live in a gated community, or any other All-Gringo neighborhood. I live in Mexico. Among Mexicans. I go where I want (which does not happen to include bars where prostitution and drugs are the basicproducts), and take no more precautions than I would at home in NewYork; which is to say I don’t wave money around, I don’t act the Ugly American, I do keep my eyes open, I’m aware of my surroundings, and I try not to behave like a fool. I’ve not always been successful at that last one...It would be nice if we could put what’s going on in Mexico inperspective, geographically and emotionally. It would be nice if we could remember that, as has been noted more than once, these drug wars wouldn’t be going on if people in the United States didn’t want the drugs, or if other people in the United States weren’t selling Mexican drug lords the guns...Most of all, it would be nice if more people in the United States actually came to this part of America (Mexico is also America, you will recall) to see for themselves what a fine place Mexico really is, and how good a vacation (or a life) here canbe. So come on down and get to know your southern neighbors. I think you’ll like it here...

I laughed totally out loud when I read this:

MFRA reports indicate that there are over 45 murders each day in the United States, and that approximately 1.5 million people are victims of violent crime each year. Although areas such as New Orleans, Chicago and New Jersey have much higher crime rates than other parts of the United States, we recommed you just avoid the place entirely. This has nothing whatsoever to do with the US media's frequent generic references to "violence in Mexico" which constantly recycle border crime statistics and apply them to travel advisories (especially during vacation seasons) for the entire country. Really, absolutely nothing to do with it. We swear.

PUERTO PENASCO IS SAFE - TOWN MEETING TODAY AT 4

Hey all,

Just a quick reminder that our next Uniting Peñasco Meeting on Thursday, March 26, at 4 p.m. in the auditorium across from City Municipal Building. The State of Sonora has a new Secretary of Tourism, Luis Carlos Soto, who will be joining us for the meeting. We believe it is very important for everyone to attend this meeting and welcome Mr. Soto as well as let him see that we desire his assistance in helping us promote our great city.

Just as importantly, we will be hearing updates from the committees that have met as to what steps are being taken to deal with the issues we discussed at last month’s meeting.

Please pass the word. I’ve attached the information form for you to pass along to others – we need everyone’s participation. As a dear friend recently reminded me - “Rome wasn’t built in a day” – so we need to persevere but we are making incredible progress.

RPT needs to capitalize on its wonderful pure air vs the Valley's worsening bad air. One in 7 residents (per the Am. Lung Assn.) are said to be afflicted by the Brown Cloud and/or the Bad Ozone. I'm one of them, which is why Las Conchas has been my principal residence for the past 9 years.There's a combination of ignorance and denial going on here...the bad air affects folks with allergies, asthma, sinus trouble and more serious pulmonary diseases.Years ago, Andy Chersin publicized his Playa Hermosa (near the Plaza Penasco site) as a "pollen free" escape from the Valley.If you get on their alert list, you can help hammer the point home...and do your readers a favor in the process!

Now, if you've talked to me in the past week, you've heard my stuffy nose and aweful hacking cough, so I can't exactly say that you DON'T get sick in RP, but it's a whole heck of a lot less than in Phoenix!

I had a meeting with Edgar Padilla, a heavy hitter in town, with three restaurants and Club Catorce. He’s got some excellent marketing ideas for Rocky Point to pull tourism over here and turn the tide a little bit! I hope that I can get MYN in the mix, too. It’s tight lipped, but genius all the same! Stay tuned over the next couple weeks to see how this develops.

STATISTICS: Mexico is Safer than the United States

I can't tell you how thankful I am for my readers:

I always thougth americans were fairly smart, but come to find out there a bunch of sheep being lead to there downfall by the news media. Also it's fact that last year 6000 people were killed and only 18,000 were killed in the good old USA. 3000 killed in Tiajuna last year , 2,700 in L.A not even counting all of orange and san diego county. It only counts if your killed in mexico and you can pass this on!
