MORE SWINE FLU IN MEXICO NEWS - ALL GOOD!

"The swine flu outbreak has cost Mexico at least $2.2 billion over the past 10 days, the finance secretary announced Tuesday, as damage to tourism and agriculture threatens to push Latin America's second-largest economy into a deep recession.

The Mexican government said Tuesday it will give $2 billion in credits and loans to offset business and tourism losses, sending the peso to 13.2 its best price against the dollar since the epidemic hit."

MYN NEEDS YOUR HELP ***UPDATE***

I have heard several comments about 4 people losing their lives on 13th last night due to a drug related altercation - is this true?!?! Please shoot me an email with any info you have on this: mynparty@yahoo.com.mx

Lynette from the Rocky Point Times just sent me an email with a link to the full meal deal no this totally random happening check this out:

A really interesting hit late last night in Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, two couples taken out, one survivor.
The hit went down in the heart of the city, 13th Street and Juárez Boulevard; El Imparcial reports
this morning.
One of the three dead was identified as Joel Meza Cázares, of Culiacán, and los pajarritos andan cantando, saying he was related to Blanca Margarita Cázares Salazar, La Emperatriz, El Mayo Zambada’s ex-girlfriend and a money-launderer for the Sinaloa Federation.

You see, the number of shootings that happen in Rocky Point per year can be counted on one hand. Everyone involved was from far away, and it was something that just sprung up outta the blue. On top of that, it's all gang violence - the drug cartels are battling between each other - it has absolutely nothing to do with tourists or tourism at all! You can bet that our police department will be even more in force than usual - I was wondering why I saw so many patrol cars today!

I am a single woman in my early 20's and I feel safer here than I do in Phoenix, LA, or Dallas (the 3 major cities I frequent) what with all their rapists, robbers, and sometimes snipers...

So there you have it, thanks to the Rocky Point Times!

COASTAL HIGHWAY TO ROCKY POINT FACTS AND NUMBERS

For all you interested in the specifics of the Coastal Highway, here they are:

The total length of the highway that stretches from El Golfo to Guymas will be 372.71 KM or 231.59 miles. The part from El Golfo to Rocky Point is 72.1 KM or 44.8 miles and the whole thing is 12 meters across or 39 feet.

The total investment on the stretch from El Golfo to Rocky Point is $374,251,124.00 pesos, which today with the exchange rate at 13-point-something-or-other, it would be about $27,976,176.84 USD.

Funding came from the federal government and the Sonoran government. They know how important it is to boost tourism. This will make the drive from San Diego about 4 hours!

MUSEOS SUBMARINOS

FOR THE NEWBIES

Puerto Peñasco, about a four-hour drive from Tucson, has grown tremendously in recent years with retirees from Arizona fueling the growth. The city, also known as Rocky Point, has about 45,000 permanent residents, and an additional 25,000 seasonal U.S. residents occupy the condominiums along the shoreline.

Puerto Peñasco has 42 hotels and motels and 14 RV facilities with 6,000 units that attract 2.3 million tourists a year, according to Sonora tourism data. The state ranks third out of 31 states and Mexico City for foreign investment, with more than $550 million annually.

CRUISE SHIPS TO ROCKY POINT

Sea of Cortez cruises to depart new Rocky Point port
Puerto Peñasco foresees 200 sailings a year as it plans massive port facility
By Gabriela Rico ARIZONA DAILY STAR

Cruising the Sea of Cortez will be another draw to Puerto Peñasco, where construction on a massive port to accommodate cruise ships is set to begin next year. "The home port will be similar to those in Miami or San Diego," said Epifanio Salido Pavlovich, director of the Sonora Office of Tourism. He said Holland America - which last week made its inaugural sailing to the new Port of Guaymas - has agreed to sail four- to seven-day cruises originating and ending at a home port in Puerto Peñasco, with two to five stops along the route. Salido said the port will be ready to receive its first ship in about three years.

When the port project is finished within about five years, as many at 200 cruises a year could be offered from the Puerto Peñasco cruise ship terminal, Salido said. He said officials plan to approach other major cruise lines to complement the service offered by Holland America. The project is being funded by Mexican government and private investors. Initially, the state of Sonora is spending about $15 million to jump-start the project, said Jesus Fontes, planning director for the state tourism agency. He said the total cost has not been calculated, since the design has yet to be developed.

The cruise-port plan comes as other transportation improvements are under way. The new Puerto Peñasco airport is expected to open in the spring, and the highway to San Luis Rio Colorado later in 2009, Salido said. Improvements also are being made to the Lukeville Port of Entry, the re-entry point into the United States from the main road to Puerto Peñasco. Construction of a private hospital, catering to U.S. baby boomers, is also under consideration.

MORE PICTURES OF HOLLAND AMERICA'S CRUISE TO GUYMAS!

I don't know when they will be heading farther north, (to RP) but keep checking back for more info! Our marina is not big enough at this very moment for cruise ships, but I have a feeling that in the near future, it will be!
