ROCKY POINT NEWS ONLINE COVERS SWINE FLU IN MEXICO

"...Part of the plan calls for assuring the general public that the flu virus has been contained in Mexico. “In the next few days we will release information about a stimulus plan to activate our economy and temporarily reduce taxes to cruise lines”, Calderon said in a televised message to the country. It was announced recently that as a consequence of the epidemic, some cruise lines have suspended travel into Mexico, diverting cruises to San Diego. Calderon assured the public that incidents of flu in Mexico are in decline and that cases are less severe than previously though..."

MOVE OVER THRIFTY - THERE'S A NEW GAME IN TOWN - MIX IS THE COOLEST PLACE IN OLD PORT

MIX is on your right hand side as you are about to enter old port - I had the oreo mix, and it made me think I was at Dairy Queen! I had the tamarindo raspado (translation: snow cone) and it was delish also! They have nachos, chips, and other snacks along with sundaes and ice cream cones - go check em out!

A NOTE FROM JILL - CONSIGN AND DESIGN

Hola!

If any of you out there may have upholstered furniture that you would like me to sell for you now is a good time. My store is getting a good flow of traffic, and merchandise has been moving out! Can you believe it! However at this time I am low on upholstered furniture, making it good time for yours to find its new home. If so give me a call at 110-6121, and we'll set up a time that is good for you to have it picked up.

Thank you,

EL COCHITO - CARNITAS IN ROCKY POINT!

El Cochito is really the only place to get good carnitas. They're located over on Guillermo Prieto and Sonora Blvd in El Centro, down from Salmo's, across from where Benny's Pizza used to be. The owners are from Sinaloa, and they are always so warm and friendly!

I recommend the Carnitas en su Jugo - it's a delicious plate of carnitas with onions and cabbage, and you can make your own tacos! It's to die for - and diet friendly, as pork is a white meat, and they have corn tortillas ;)
Tacos are $13 pesos and the plates are $65, I believe - trust me - the pictures barely do it justice - it's a LOT of food!
Stay tuned for more from this little known restaurant right in the heart of the city...

MEXPATPOLLS - QUICKLY BECOMING AN MYN FAVE - EXPAT TALKS SWINE FLU NEWS

I wanted to find a way to demonstrate to myself and others the tone of the US media with respect to Mexico. I'm not doing anything majorly scientific here, just trying a few different Google searches to see what the results are. Let's see what happens when we Google "world health organization praises mexico" Ok, here's the sources of the first ten responses to that search;

Click here to find out the top ten searches on Google for different key words regarding the swine flu in Mexico

ANITA FROM THE EXAMINER WRITES ANOTHER FANTASTIC ARTICLE - SWINE FLU - ROCKY POINT

A little tired of reading about swine flu or the H1N1? Your're not alone. Today, there are zero cases of H1N1 in Puerto Penasco ( Rocky Point) , Sonora Mexico and 131 cases in Arizona, and a total of 1639 in the United States.

I YANKED THIS STRAIGHT FROM MEXPATPOLLS

I laughed totally out loud when I read this:

MFRA reports indicate that there are over 45 murders each day in the United States, and that approximately 1.5 million people are victims of violent crime each year. Although areas such as New Orleans, Chicago and New Jersey have much higher crime rates than other parts of the United States, we recommed you just avoid the place entirely. This has nothing whatsoever to do with the US media's frequent generic references to "violence in Mexico" which constantly recycle border crime statistics and apply them to travel advisories (especially during vacation seasons) for the entire country. Really, absolutely nothing to do with it. We swear.

Tracking the progress of H1N1 swine flu

This map and the data behind it were compiled by Dr. Henry Niman, a biomedical researcher in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, using technology provided by Rhiza Labs and Google. The map was compiled using data from official sources, news reports and user-contributions.Rhiza's web-based mapping product, Insight, is helping Dr. Niman get official and unofficial data into the tracking system faster while giving researchers and the public many options for viewing the data in a useful and understandable way. POST #1718 A DIRECT QUOTE FROM MARK MULLIGAN

"...And folks, please, don't let this swine flu thing keep you from coming down to San Carlos for any reason whatsoever....it's as far from us (in Mexico City) as New York City is from you. In fact, there's a greater risk of me catching it in Phoenix then there is of you catching it here. AND, I guarantee you will not be dragged out of your car by your hair by a drug trafficker and executed, like the anchorman on CNN wants to scare you into believing. I'm still waiting anxiously for the president of Mexico to stand behind a podium with a straight face and issue a "travel warning", alerting citizens not to travel to the U.S. because reportedly there was a carjacking in Cleveland yesterday. Ridiculous? EXACTLY. See you on the beach!..."

QUOTE OF THE DAY

When you where a child, you were subtly made to feel guilty and unworthy as a way to limit and control you. It is not that your parents set out to do that. It was probably what they had learned from their parents and they were simply passing on to you what they had learned. It is passed down from generation to generation until some one protests enough to wake themselves up. To overcome these feelings of guilt and unworthiness, you must bring them into the full light of consciousness. Every time that guilt arises, just be aware of it. Witness it. Express it. But do not believe in it. It is not the truth.

WHAT ANITA HAS TO SAY ABOUT SWINE FLU IN ROCKY POINT

"...Just returning from a weekend at the beach in Puerto Penasco, Mexico, I have been asked several times, if I was concerned about catching “Swine Flu”. HOLLAND AMERICA CRUISE SHIPS TO ROCKY POINT

April 1, 2009 -- The Holland America shipping company revealed that in three years, with the construction of a Cruise Ship Home Port, Puerto Penasco will be taking another step to become a world-class tourist destination.

Holland America is planning to have one cruise ship a week on the Sea of Cortez route as of 2011, stated Simon Douwes, Planning and Scheduling Director, who recently confirmed that at the latest in three years, Puerto Penasco will become the site for the arrival and departure of cruise ships.Plans are to make between 50 and 60 trips in the “World's Aquarium”, departing from Puerto Penasco to Guaymas, Loreto, La Paz and Topolobampo, and then, returning to the port of departure.

He stated that the Sea of Cortez route is excellent for the company, because in only seven days they can go to six Mexican ports, which will provide a myriad of attractions.

TONIGHT AT PORTOFINO - BOHEMIAN NIGHT

Tuesday night is Bohemian night at Portofino! They have a special menu with a special price and a rockin group for entertainment! I might just pop over for a glass of wine...

C'MON AZ CENTRAL - CUT US SOME SLACK! MYN REBUTTAL

Most of the time AZ Central is pretty good on delivering positive info about Mexico - Puerto Penasco in specific, but there are just some points in their latest article, "Recession, flu hit businesses in Puerto Penasco" that I just need to get out there...(if you are in total agreement with this article, please don't read any further b/c I'm about to pick it apart piece by piece)

Among the hardest-hit communities is the coastal getaway of Rocky Point, the city 215 miles south of Phoenix that has been transformed from tourist mecca to virtual ghost town.
I'm not sure when they were here to write this article (maybe mid week?) but last weekend there were people down here - I now live on the Malecon in the Old Port, and there was plenty of hustle n bustle this weekend. The whole town was abuzz because we were pleasantly surprised that there WERE people in town.

Arturo Rodriguez Rico is president of CANACO, the chamber of commerce in Rocky Point, the city in Sonora, Mexico, also known as Puerto Peñasco.
This one is nit picky, but get it right: the city's name is Puerto Peñasco, and it's "aka" Rocky Point.

Then, on Sunday night, major drug-cartel mayhem struck for the first time, with four people killed in the heart of the community.
Three people died. One survived. Thanks for adding that IS the first time this has happened!

Police tape flutters in the breeze at Rocky Point's main intersection, where machine-gun fire riddled a Ford Fusion. Some bullets slammed into a nearby bank. Others struck the victims: two men and two women, all outsiders from Caborca and Sinaloa.
Again, thanks for mentioning they were outsiders, but there is no tape fluttering and the bank's windows have been replaced. The imagery here makes it seem like South Central LA.

Back in Rocky Point, streets are quiet. Vendors outnumber tourists 10 to 1. Restaurant workers - in protective masks - stand on sidewalks hoping for customers. With schools closed, children play tag near their parents' shops.
Again, what day were they here to see the streets and did they count every vendor and every tourist in town to come up with that ratio? Restaurant workers NORMALLY wear protective masks for sanitary purposes. There are few people that I've seen in town wearing face masks on a regular basis.

I do appriciate the slight positive up turn in regards to tourists being happy to have Penasco to themselves. Despite the postive nuances, there are just some points in this article that are not toally correct. I guess if this report would have been taken on a Friday or Saturday afternoon, it would have been different.

THIRSTY PARROT FIGHT NIGHT

Don't miss it - this afternoon! I'll be there front n center!
After what happened to me Thursday night, you'd think that I wouldn't want to be involved in any fights, but well...it's televised, so I'll be ok.

MYN'S TAKE ON THIS SWINE FLU THING

I don't think it fair to voice my exact opinion on this whole flu garbage (I might lose readership), so I'll try to remain neutral. "If you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all" Well, okay...

Las Palomas just sent out an email to all its owners about the swine flu, and I copied and pasted the important parts:

We know that you, as well as your guests, are concerned about the outbreak of Swine Influenza - now being called Influenza H1N1 - in Mexico and other countries. It is important to point out that up until today here in Puerto Peñasco, and in all of the state of Sonora for that matter, there have been NO reported cases of this disease.

Here are some common sense tips to stay well:
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze.
  • Alcohol based hand cleaners are also effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.
