SPRING BREAK IN ROCKY POINT 2009
Like it, love it, or hate it…spring break is on its way to our streets.
If you are coming down to party in RP, stay tuned for MYN’s list of hot parties to go to, tips for curing a hangover, places to eat, things to do, and SAFTY TIPS – no, you are NOT invincible. The police are here to help you, but if you are wasted beyond belief and you are driving and/or disrespectful, they will throw your ass in jail, period.
If you are coming down to have some family time with the kiddos, I will post about places to go that your children will not be subjected to the drunken debauchery, half nakedness, and general mayhem of Rocky Point’s spring break madness – there’s tons of things to do during the day, and I’ll tell you where the spring breakers DON’T go, so you can enjoy your vacay in peace.
Locals, I wish I could give you the hideouts, but you already know them – too bad, so sad. Deal with it! Haha it’ll be over in approximately 16 days. Are you going out? Are you going to party? ROCKY POINT IS SAFE
The Arizona Republic printed my letter this past Tuesday. It won't change the tide but at least may help provide some perspective and balance to the scared-y cats.
Memo to Mexi-phobes: Rocky Point is still pretty much the same safe place it has always been. While it is no longer a sleepy fishing town, it is still relatively quiet and very welcoming to spring breakers. The drug war problems in Tijuana and Nogales are nowhere in evidence. Having had a 2nd home in Rocky Point for 25 years, I feel safer in Puerto Penasco than most parts of Phoenix. Those who are cautioning folks to stay away need a geography lesson!

MARTIN FROM THIRSTY PARROT SAYS...
Hilariousness of the week + word of the week
So I was at the Thirsty Parrot the other day (surprised? You shouldn’t be) and I was chatting with Martin, (best bartender in RP according to Mexico Living Mag) and we were talking about people in general; humans, really. Those deep thought provoking convers that a loner usually has with a bartender, ya know?
One particular person came up in the conversation, and without any emotional attachment involved, he said, “They looked raggedy” Now, if you don’t know me, I’m one of the queens of using ghetto, slang, and sometimes my very own made up words to describe things. When Martin eloquently used the word raggedy, I nearly fell off the bar stool laughing my arse off.
For those of you who may not know, raggedy is a term used to describe women mostly; women that have disheveled hair, no makeup and loose, baggy, or otherwise frumpy clothes on from 10 years ago. Dirty fingernails are optional.
When he described the person in question as raggedy, that’s exactly how that person is.
Ok, now that I’ve explained it and re-read it, I assume you’d have had to have been there for it to be as funny as it was to me. At least I’ve gotten subsequent laughs from it!

OPEN LETTER #3 ABOUT SPRING BREAK IN ROCKY POINT
I'm loving the fact that people are standing up for Rocky Point and for Mexico in general through this whole Spring Break in Mexico is dangerous garbage. Here's a letter from Russ Black, associate publisher for Mexico Living Magazine:
To whom it may concern,I am a full time resident of Puerto Penasco Rocky Point Sonora Mexico. I understand that someone has instructed spring breakers to not visit us because it is too dangerous. This is just plain ridiculous. My wife and I sold a business 2 1/2 years ago in Arizona and moved into our house that we bought 6 years ago as a retreat from the city. We moved here with our now 15 year old son and we are having a great life. We live off-beach in a neighborhood of primarily Mexican families. We attend our church here, we go to the beach, we go to the local and tourist Cantinas and all in all we enjoy all that our little town has to offer. We are American and we are white people and we find that there is no class distinction here. We find that we live a tranquil and safe life. It is very disturbing to us that crap has to be said of our town because of the violence caused by the illicit drug trade that the US sponsors. I am sure that I could find trouble here if I wanted to. I am sure that students can find trouble here if they want to. I think that is true of any city large or small. To blindly and incorrectly label Puerto Penasco "off limits" simply because of your lack of knowledge or the thought that anything Mexican is dangerous is just WRONG! If you want to come down and experience a better way of life simply email me and I will make the arrangements.

I found this on the school's website. The frickin' dean (I wanted to use the real words) should be ashamed of herself, the assistant dean too! They preach about warnings and the students being informed and, they cannot even provide accurate information themselves. They obviously live in a fog, under the US media bubble. They are totally misinformed about Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point) and Mexico in general.
I think I will send this to a few others who might like to see it, who are pro-Rocky Point. Let's use our media connections to put a stop to people like the dean and co. You would think a dean of students would be more educated before issuing such a grossly one-sided warning. Do they not know the problem lies within the United States and their need for drugs? Students are waaaaay safer in Mexico than, in the states. But, you wont hear that on the news. Good press doesn't sell papers. Ex. you wont hear about the million successful and welcoming border crossings each day but, you will hear, about the guys who got caught smuggling drugs into the US to a bunch of crackheads. I could go on but wont. WE ARE BETTER OFF IN MEXICO.

ROCKY POINT GEARING UP FOR SPRING BREAK 2009
I love this open letter - I know it's long, but it's worth the read:
I am appalled that each year that the powers that be send out scare tactics to the people that want to come to Puerto Penasco for Spring Break. Never ever do you send this information out to your students during the year at any other time. People are here every weekend to enjoy the beaches and all the great food, drinks and the fun and beaches that Rocky Point has to offer.
There is not more DUIs, stupid stuff, jail time and uninsured motorist that have any more problems than here in Mexico. People killed on ATCs, drownings from jumping in the water at let's say, Havasu, San Diego, Snow Bowl, the Dunes in Yuma, etc. Sensationalism is all part of your news and it hurts your creditability, tourism in the US as well as here in Mexico. Unless you know first hand, you should keep your fingers off of the computer.
Remember Florida when 600 people were killed a month because of the Cuban Drug Cartels? More people were killed than ever before here in all of Sonora, Mexico. Check your files.
I understand that you are trying to keep all of the money that is going to be spent in Mexico for Spring Break and keep it in the U.S. Lying and scaring people away from having a great vacation is not a honest and true way to help your students and the parents of those they support.
Yes, bad things will and always happen to those that do drugs, drive at night, hang out in bad places and look for trouble. Pick any country and that will happen...including and more sooooo in the United States. Look at your local news and U will see more in one day than you will see in Puerto Penasco. Geez, Hunting Beach has more deaths and problems than we have in our whole city all year!
I invite you to come to Rocky Point and meet all of the people here, the local Police, the Special Tourist Police that all speak English and visit the major local Spring Break attractions where all of your students and families come to see and enjoy. I will certainly pay for your accommodations and set up meetings with all of the local authorities.
Otherwise, if you will not come and see first hand for your report and news, I suggest that you stop reporting on Rocky Point and the security, Police and advantages of driving 4 hours to a great location on the Sea of Cortez.

LAZY WEDNESDAY IN ROCKY POINT
That's exactly what it is! It's a crisp 65 degrees and breezy...I'm taking a break from running like a mad woman, and I have to admit...it's really nice!
I've got laundry done, doing some D'Maintenance stuff - just relaxing mid week solo with Hed Kandi in the background...it's very theraputic!

ROCKY POINT FOOD DISTRIBUTION
We handed out 500 + blankets, 4 boxes & 6 bags of clothes, about 200 jars of peanut butter, some honey, soup, about 200+ toys, a big giant bag of sweats, fruit cups, toothpaste/toothbrushes, coffee, soaps & shampoos, tuna and lots and lots of hugs!
In case you are wondering the folks who were able to join us were; Steve, Annie, Shelby, Sofia & Blue Sells; Mary Snyder, Annie (from puerta privada) and her friend, Barbara Wilkinson, Michael Johns and Luis Altamirano!

AROUND D' CORNER'S PSYTRANCE NIGHT
Ch ch check it out! I can't say I'm going for sure or not, but DJ Ruy will be on the ones and twos spinning (you guessed it) psytrance all night long - Emilio is kind enough to give us $1 shots all night every Thursday night!
CHANGO'S - THE ONLY SPORTS BAR ON SANDY BEACH
If you haven't been to Chango's for lunch, you should definately go! I had their fish sandwich yesterday and it was outta this world! It was a big thick fish fillet, on ciabatta bread, and I could harly finish it all. Also, I have renewed my Chango's Chips (they're good for free beer) stash, so when you see me, don't forget to ask for one!
